STEM Activity Day for Middle School Girls

STEM DAY 4 GIRLS!

I am raising money to hold a FREE day of STEM activities for 20 middle school girls.  The day is scheduled for July 18, 2015 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Activities include learning how to solder, creating persistence of vision wands, poetry, and 3d modeling.  Because we want to keep the STEM day free, we are asking for funds to pay for lunch, materials, 3d printing of their designed objects from sculpteo (which have offered a 20% discount to us for this event) and t-shirts for the girls and volunteers!

Who AM I?

I am the chair of the Technology Department at a public magnet high school for the arts and technology.  I am also a doctoral student with a research focus of women in STEM.

MY story

As a female engineer, and now teacher of engineering, it is personally important to me to spark interest in girls for STEM!  I see so many girls who have the capability to succeed in a STEM career dismiss the possibility because they believe that STEM is "for boys" or "too hard."  I want to show young girls that there is no great mystery to circuits and computer design, that there is art and creativity involved in these activities along with science!

Where will the money go?

The money will go to purchasing the following supplies:

- New soldering irons (20 for ~$300)

- T-shirts for the girls and volunteers to remember and advertise for the next year (30 for ~$300).

- Lunch/snacks for the girls and volunteers (~$200)

We plan to use any excess funds as a head start for next summer.
