Hello lovely backers! 5 DAYS TO GO!!!

I've asked a couple of my friends to shine a light on the histories & herstories that they believe are neglected or relatively unheard of. The first installment comes from Filmmaker, photographer & Digital Artist Paul Stringer aka Stringy P!

Enjoy.

Why Georges Méliès is important to me and why he would definitely back Aliyah’s campaign

For those of you in the know, the cinematic know that is, Georges Méliès could be described as a thought leader, innovator and downright genius. He was the first ever magician of cinema and with over 500 films to his name was a tremendously hard worker.

This man is an inspiration and a model to all artists, especially those working within the media industry. His ability to suspend reality and create mind boggling (at the time – 1888-1923) illusions through the medium of film was unique and spectacular. The effect that Georges had on history is phenomenal, he was a pioneer of cinema in France, and created the first special effects, that he adapted from his stage shows as an illusionist, he also worked out early in camera effects, such a double exposure and some of the first superimposition. One of the main reasons why this gentleman has had a profound effect on my life and career is that he made the impossible possible. He shifted the balance of film, creating completely new and unique concepts and techniques through trial and error and sheer hard work. This is something I can only hope to achieve in my career and anything close would be a great success.

Why is this relevant to Aliyah? Well, Aliyah is planning to study to become a film and television researcher, and push proper representation of people in mainline cinema. This (unfortunately) is something that would be groundbreaking, you only have to look at the list of highest paid actors to see that there is a huge inequality in the ratio of females to males and the representation of actors that are non white. Much like Méliès, Aliyah would be a pioneer, and her work could truly go on to be a game changer. I’m incredibly proud to know her as a friend and colleague, and you should get to know her too.

“My friends, I address you all tonight as you truly are; wizards, mermaids, travelers, adventurers, magicians... Come and dream with me.”
Georges Méliès
