Help me join Team GB!

Hello All

My name is Laura Thompson. I have been selected to be a part of the Great Britain Women’s National Fastpitch Softball team. I have been a part of the GB programme for more then a decade, coming up from the Great Britain U19 team, Great Britain development team and now I am a recurring name on the senior team. During my time on the senior team I have represented my country in two Pre-Olympic Tournaments, two Olympic Qualifier Tournaments, five European Tournaments, two World Cup Tournaments and two World Championship Tournaments. To top all these competitions I was also honoured to receive the Great Britain Hall of Fame award in 2013.

Although I am not the oldest player on the team, I am by far the veteran, with many years under my belt. I have been extremely blessed with the opportunity and good health to compete at this level for so long. With the ever changing sports environment I have therefore grown a lot within myself, not just with loyalty but perseverance, dedication, and discipline etc; through which I have learned so much about myself and my abilities.

The GB softball team has come through thick and thin. We are currently placed 5th in Europe, and have a lot of hard work to do in this coming tournament.

This project is very important to both myself and people involved in this programme. The World Championship Tournament is to be held in the Netherlands this year, 15th - 24th Aug. This is the first time that a tournament of this calibre has ever been held in Europe. Great Britain softball has worked very hard to be a part of this moment.

The passion I have for this sport, and extreme pride I experience when playing under my country's flag is indescribable. To be able to compete at this level once again and on this stage has overwhelming meaning.

The Million Dollar Question

Some of you will know that softball was dropped by the federation as an Olympic sport in 2008. This action means that all funding towards softball was stopped by the governing association within the U.K. Each year it has been down to the individuals within the team to fund themselves, with very little in the form of grants and aid. It has become extremely hard for myself and others to fund our own way through competition, especially when the personal sacrifice is for an event that we all feel so passionate about and have so much desire to be a part of.

I am appealing to you for a donation, no matter the amount (it all adds up) to help with the expenses involved. Including (flights, training camp expenses, food, equipment/kit etc.) The total expense is estimated to be roughly £1000. With your help I would like to reach this goal, so that I can join my team in the Netherlands and represent Great Britain once again. Your help is greatly appreciated.
