UPDATE FROM THE LAST DAY OF THE CROWDFUNDER
Wow! This is it. Today's the last day of the crowdfunder. As I type....13 hours to go.
We've been stunned by how many people have contributed to a vision we have (but no video to show) and the faith they have in this project. We're pleased to say, that regardless of how much money we've all raised, we're STILL GOING AHEAD with the project -which we envision as a rolling programme. More deets to follow on this.
But the message for today. Help us reach a £10k target. Please ask friends and family. Every little helps. Truly.
Happy Easter
Laura and Zubeda
April Fool's Day? Nooooo
#2days to go. It's all cracking and bubbling with excitement. We've just finished pitching our project to 300 people at Conway Hall this Monday - and we're still BUZZING from all the amazing support out there. We met the guy who funded the "Four lions" film and he's offered to put us in touch with CHRIS MORRIS (the producer -wowowowow) http://www.fourlionsthemovie.com
My last few asks! CAN YOU PLEDGE? Can you get your 1 friend and family member to pledge too so that we can grow our support by the end of this week? We're blown away with all the amazing people we're meeting, but we want to raise as much money to get the project off the ground. Remember 1 click, 2 minutes. It's as easy as that. http://bit.ly/connectjustice
Warm wishes from Zubeda and Laura :)
Hot off the press: Blog:The Ordinariness of Violence and the Stories of Formers
The stories of those formerly involved in violent extremism must be told in order for us to understand and reverse the potential for brutality
A beautiful man, or a cold-blooded killer: this is the current dichotomy conjured by the name Mohammed Emwazi, or perhaps more commonly known by his media sobriquet “Jihadi John”, a name that elicits justifiable hostility, revulsion and perplexity in that it presents the image of a vicious, brutal, murdering IS henchman.
In recent weeks, the quest to reveal the man behind the mask has led to descriptions of his personality and actions before Syria, from a teacher’s assessment describing him as a steady, ordinary boy, to security service assertions that he was a young man on a violent radical trajectory. Most controversial of these analyses has been the words of Asim Qureshi of the human rights group Cage, who described his impression of Emwazi as a “beautiful young man” – a comment interpreted as inappropriate and outrageous in light of Emwazi’s metamorphosis into a killer.

Countdown fever!
WE'RE 22% (£5,500) FUNDED –
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
“We want to raise this money from communities, as we believe the project will gain credibility if it is free from government funding, because we know that the problem needs addressing from within all our communities. Connecting with ‘real’ voices is important in preventing and halting the path to violence.”
The money is for one thing and one thing only.
✔ To produce the 5 videos of former (Islamists and far right) extremists and to create a free online resource available to everyone.
✖ You WON’T be paying for our salaries or lining anyone’s pockets
That’s why want to raise the money from communities and business.
Can you help us succeed?
ALERT: #15 DAY COUNTDOWN. WE NEED YOUR PLEDGES.
Why our supporters are pledging their support for the anti-extremism video project crowdfunder:
"Because everyone has a stake in it"
"Only through understanding extremist behaviour can we tackle it"
Shaista Chishty, photographer, London
So, the days are ticking away and we've got £4215 in support which is so fantastic! We couldn't have done this without you
We're now onto an amazing milestone.
- We're 16% funded.
- We've got 35 sponsors
- We've got 42 supporters
And because of you our community is growing.
We've been blown away by the support we've got from everyone and we've reached a magnificent milestone in raising over £2k in the last week BUT WE NEED TO REACH OUR TARGET OF £17,500.
THANKS FROM THE CONNECTJUSTICE TEAM!!
"Those who have 'been there, done that' have a compelling story to tell us about why people join and then turn away from extremism. We want all our communities to better understand these complexities in order to create solutions, so that the politics of fear does not divide us."
So there’s still lots of ways you can get involved:
- Pledge a small amount to make the idea happen! Small pledges = big communities (= lovely, happy people). Simple.
- Share the campaign with people you know, we could do with every ounce of help possible sharing this far and wide and would be completely thrilled if you could share it with friends, family and colleagues!
- Check out our crowdfunder page for ideas around how the pledging reward system works.
- Have fun with us on #Turnarnd360 as we would love to hear your thoughts!
Morning everyone!
Day one: 5% funded - 7 sponsors and £1300 raised. WOW!
So, we're on an absolute journey here with the crowdsource funding experiment. Total madness. We've been going mad on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, WhatsApp and telling people (real ones!) about the work we're doing and this particular project. We've got a long way to go, but I totally believe we'll raise the money and the grassroots backing we want for this project.
We're only going to be able to do this with your help so thanks for your unbelievable support!
Thank you so much EVERYONE, and hope we continue the convos on - #Turnarnd360
We will be in touch very soon!
Lots and lots of love from Zubeda, Laura and the entire ConnectJustice team!
