Obstetrics and Gynaecology Doctor Seeks Help to Raise Funds

About me

My name is Deesha I have been working as a doctor for 4 years. I am a junior trainee specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (pregnancy related problems and woman's health), currently working at a West London Hospital.

The Project

I will be travelling to Ethiopia on the 9th of May with a group of 9 doctors, 8 nurses and 2 helpers. We will be spending 10 days volunteering at Bethel Hospital, just outside the capital Addis Ababa.  We will be working hard, around 12-13 hours a day including the weekend to provide free medical aid to woman there, many of whom will have advanced gynaecological cancer requiring surgery.

The population of Ethiopia is around 85 million. Most of the country’s people live in very rural areas rather than big cities. Often people live over 100km from the nearest hospital and walk or are carried for several days to reach medical help if there is an emergency. Ethiopia has less than 2000 doctors to service the whole population. There are a number of medical schools within the country training new doctors. However 95% of medical graduates leave the country after finishing their degree.

The trip is organised by a small charity called Wings of Healing - wingsofhealing.org.uk. The website has information about previous trips to Ethiopia.

Where will the money go?

I hope to raise money to help fund the trip - flights and accommodation (£1,500). Any extra will go directly to the charity ( Wings of Healing - wingsofhealing.org.uk )

I would be incredibly grateful for any donation however small.

Please share with anyone you think will be interested.

Massive thank you to everyone!
