Helping every child to achieve their full potential.

Researching inclusive education and Special Educational Needs

I'm raising £3000 for a masters degree researching the most effective ways for mainstream secondary schools to provide positive, inclusive education for students with special educational needs.

Conventional lessons can often present barriers to learners with special educational needs which can make it difficult for them to achieve their full potential. I believe that by adapting specific parts of classroom practice we can remove these barriers and facilitate the development of students with special educational needs. What is also brilliant is that most strategies that help children with special educational needs help other children too.

So we can create truly inclusive education that supports the progress of all children and enables students with special educational needs to feel included and in control of their learning.

Who am i?

My name is Lauren Jennings. I am a 30 year old, dyslexic, Sen teaching assistant from Manchester. I am pationate about changing the way we teach to suit our students rather than expecting the students to change to suit the way we teach.

Why am I doing this?

Imagine a child who thinks that everyone sees words as  blurry  lines and thinks that they are stupid for not being able to read them. A child angry and confused when told they have an attitude problem because they can't find a new classroom they have never seen before . A child humiliated when told they are holding up the lesson because they loose their place when copying of the board. A child loosing hope when they are called lazy because they don't spell their words right in big pieces of writing, or don't seem to know the difference between there, their and they're. Our schools are full of children like this and I was one of them.
However great support, clever strategies and a can do attitude can empower these students to achieve their goals.
A great deal of progress has already been made in the area of special educational needs but we are still a long way from providing truly inclusive education in our mainstream schools. I am dedicated to continuing research into educational approaches that meet the needs of the children in our classrooms and overcome the barriers they face.

Since the government changed the way postgraduate degrees are funded it has become more difficult for people to afford to study, with many students looking for funding from trust, charities and private sponsors. Unfortunately, although special educational needs seems to be close to many people's hearts there is little funding available.

Where will the money go?

All the money I raise will go towards paying university fees for my masters project. Fees for the first year are £1830 and the same again for the second year.
