Who we are

FUNDING FLIGHT COSTS FOR INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY

We are a group of 16-18 year olds from low income households in Newham, London who need to fund the costs of flights so we can join a life changing 10 week volunteering expedition in either Tanzania, Borneo or Costa Rica/Nicaragua in the summer of 2015.

This is an initiative run by Raleigh International in partnership with our college, Newham Sixth form College (NewVIc). We have been tasked to fundraise the costs of our flights so at least seven of us can join the full 10 week expedition.

Summary

With your amazing support for our project we will be able to have an experience which normally we could only dream about, one that truly will shape our lives. We feel privileged to be offered this opportunity and want to make the most of it if we get the funding.

We are already taking part in a whole host of fundraising initiatives such as walking the entire circle line above ground in one day, having to have a photo at every station as well as taking part in challenges on this 26 mile trek across London.

We are also getting involved in local volunteering and development projects at college.

If we get the money to secure our place on the international expedition we will have the chance to work alongside communities living in poverty on sustainable development projects and help protect vulnerable environments. We will challenge ourselves both physically and mentally and develop skills that will stay with us for the rest of our life. We will be encouraged to become a leader, creating change in communities across the world and back in London. Visiting countries such as Tanzania,

Our story

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us and although we all have different motivations for applying for a ten week volunteering expedition we all share the common goal of wanting to develop ourselves and make a positive difference locally and across the world. Every few weeks we will share with you our individual reasons for taking part and the impact your fundraising money will have.

Where will the money go?

We only have the chance of securing a place on the expedition due to both Raleigh International and NewVIc supplementing much of the costs of the expedition itself. However, we have been set fundraising targets of at least £800 per person. At the moment we need to focus on raising at least £200 a person towards the flights costs. Once we achieve this target our place on the expedition is confirmed.

If we hit our full target all the money will cover the flights cost which means we are definitely going on the expedition. However, if we accrue extra funds then this will start going towards our kit, vaccination and visa costs.

We will give bi-weekly updates on our progress and add images of our other fundraising activities.

At the moment eight (8) of us have the opportunity to volunteer abroad and so we would need at least £1600 for flight costs. This will pay for flights, equipment, boots and their travel pack (rucksack, sleeping bag).  We need to secure this money by 1st June 2015.

Rewards

The biggest reward we can offer would be a truly heartfelt thank you for helping a young person achieve a dream. For everyone that pledges funds we will send a letter to say thank you and we will also keep you updated with blogs and images of our progress towards the expedition and then stories about expedition itself.

However, we will show our appreciation for the certain donations and the rewards are in accordance with set donations. These you can see on the right side of the page.
