University of Sheffield Engineering students design, build and race a formula student car

A short summary of your projects

Sheffield Formula Racing, SFR, represents The University of Sheffield in The Institute of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) annual Formula Student competition. The team consists of students from across the engineering faculty, but mainly from the department of mechanical engineering. Each year we design, build & race a singe seat formula style race car to take to an international competition at Silverstone, which is entered by over 100 universities from around the globe. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube

Your story

"Formula Student (FS) is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the IMechE. Backed by industry and high profile engineers such as our Patron Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers. Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle." For more information about the competition visit the IMechE's website.

As part of the project we gain valuable skills such as teamwork, networking, machining, design, business and financial planning. It also provides us with an exceptionally good way of demonstrating engineering ability. We are funded entirely by sponsorship from engineering companies, the university itself and now by generous individuals such as yourself.

In our sixth year, SFR is striving to become one of the best teams in the country, using good engineering knowledge and a simple design philosophy that will push us to the top of this prestigious event. In order to continue the improvements that we have made year after year we are looking into new ways of generating funds.
