WASHBAG is the short film debut from Somerville alumnus, Will Truefitt (English, 2011),
shot by fellow Somervillian, Toby Mann (English, 2011). The film is being produced by
Kangaroo Films, an emergent independent film company founded by Oxford graduates in
2014.
WASHBAG follows three twenty-somethings undergoing their post-uni emotional hangover. Through a series of chance encounters, the short explores the comedy and the heartbreak of the British Millennial Experience, dramatising the dirty little fingerprints we leave on each others’ lives.
WASHBAG is going to take lot of care and attention to make. Despite its claustrophobic domestic setting, like any film, we're going to need certain funds to bring WASHBAG audiences. Equipment, logistics and post-production facilities cost money, and even though we're going to be calling in all the favours we can, we're here to ask you lovely people for just a little bit of help.
SYNOPSIS
LOLA is sleepwalking through her twenties. Nothing has changed for her since uni: same boyfriend, same crummy flat — she’s even still wearing the same pants.
But when she
comes across a handsome and enigmatic stranger handling those very same pants, it sets
into motion a series of events that will have huge ramifications for Lola, her life, and
her relationships.
It might even wake her up.
OUR CHARACTERS
LOLA JONES, 24, is a bright and insightful young woman, but she’s in a rut. She’d dreamt
of being a photographer, but her camera is gathering dust while she struggles to scrape
together enough money to keep herself and her uni boyfriend in their pokey East London
flat. She’s lost sight of who she is and what she wants from life, but fate is about to give
her the most dangerous gift possible: a choice.
Lola’s boyfriend MAX ECCLES, 24, is an acerbic but somewhat hopeless individual— he
lives in a bin but seems to think he’s won the lottery. The day he met Lola at university
was the best of his life, but as they face the real world together, he can feel her slipping
away. Perhaps holding on wouldn’t be so tough if one of his arms wasn’t encased in
plaster— the result of a characteristically half-cocked romantic misadventure.
DANNY LOMBARD, 28, at first glance seems to be a handsome man of the world: a successful carpenter and artist. In reality, Danny’s true masterpiece is himself. A narcissist and pseudointellectual, Danny seems to have modelled his hermetic Renaissance Man schtick on a 90s Diet Coke advert. Deep down, he’s just as scared and cynical as anyone.
